Yup... another mad men dress. I am still watching season 5 of the series. So expect more copy cat dresses to come. LOL! And it wont be exactly the same copy cat from head to toes because my figure from the beautiful actresses are one sky and one earth. {direct translation from a Chinese phrase}. So the end products are more subtle and less sexy.
Pattern used: burda style vintage sewing handbook Jamie dress.
Materials used: Black kona cotton 1.5 yards, black broadcloth 1 yard for lining, interfacing and a invisible zip. The brown sequined trimmings are brought from DAISO back in SG. Only cost $2SGD and looks fabulous on this simple shift dress.
Modifications done: I made a full lining for this dress this time and it really helps with the wrinkles:) The front bodice is slashed in the center to make the diamond cut out easier to work with. And I hand sewed on the trimmings to the edge of the diamond cut out and the neckline. After finishing the dress, I realized the cut out is a bit too small compared to the actual dress worn by megan. Which is lucky for me, cos I dun really have any "lines" to show unless I resort to brown eye shadows for it. This smaller cut out is more suitable for my figure.
What I love: It's black! A perfect little black dress for my lifestyle. The loose fit which hides my tummy which means I can eat and eat without worrying about bulging tummy. I worn it to my husband friend baby shower and it's really comfortable... Even though I spend the whole of the party chasing after my little boy and grabbing him before he dives into their pool. Super adrenaline rush throughout the party. LOL!
Regrets: Lack of pockets again...
for the hemming I used blind hand stitches and I also hand whip stitched the lining to the back zipper.
The trimming sure doesn't look like they are only $2sgd isn't it?
This time the length of this dress looks a bit long for me. Maybe its because of the plainness of the black dress. When I got the time, I might just turn over the hemming n blind stitch it shorter.
Kids clothes week is starting this week! I will be uploading the new clothes and pants for my boys there. Have you joined this challenge as well? This week will be a boys clothes churning production for me. Hopefully I will be able to squeeze out some selfish sewing too;)
Thanks for reading!
XOXO Ashley
